Clogged sink/bathtub drain

Got a slow moving drain?  A cup of white vinegar plus one cup baking soda will do the trick.   Important to let it sit for a few minutes (bubbles happen). Pour boiling water down the drain after the vinegar and baking soda have had a chance to work.

Soap scum fun: You have a couple of good options.  Baking soda and elbow grease.  Sprinkle baking soda and use a good brush.  White distilled vinegar is the wonder product just apply directly and let the magic begin.

Carpet spot: club soda and scrub

Homemade carpet fresh:  Sprinkle baking soda on carpet and let sit for about 20 minutes.  If you want some fragrance dried lavender is awesome.

Oven cleaning:  Number one rule with ovens is quick clean up.  So if you have a fresh spill,  pour salt on it ASAP. If you need just to clean the oven make a paste of baking soda and water.  The ratio is 2-3 tbl. per cup the paste should be thin.  Use a bristle brush to scrub it down.

Garbage Disposal Odors:
Target odors and clean and sharpen blades by grinding ice and citrus rinds (lemon orange).

Dog or toilet-training accidents:  Wash with mild soap and water, but hydrogen peroxide is an excellent additive for more stubborn accidents.

Toilet cleaning/maintenance: Baking soda and lemon juice into your toilet and leave. Eventually you’ll will have to use the toilet and will need to scrub it out.

Toilet Bowl Cleaners:
Baking Soda and Vinegar: Sprinkle baking soda into the bowl, then squirt with vinegar and scour with a toilet brush. Cleans and deodorizes.
Denture tablets!!  Drop two tablets into the bowl and scrub.

Single man toilet cleaning: Use white vinegar around the bowl, and sprinkle with baking soda, scrub.  Use lemon or lavender for a pleasant scent.

Burned your dinner?  Or is your house a little stinky?  We have several options, one for the oven the other on the stove top.  Option #1 keep an inexpensive oven pan for times like these.   Sprinkle the pan with good smelling stuff like allspice, lavender, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, orange, grapefruit peels (or oil).  Then place in the oven on about 150 degrees (give or take).   Option #2 same ingredients, but toss in a pot with water and simmer on LOW for a couple of hours.  Chose whatever you like on the list of items and create your own home fragrance.

Place baking soda absorbs orders.  Just put a box in a closet, refrigerator, and/or any other stinky areas.
Homemade lemon air freshener:

Dissolve baking soda in 2 cups hot water, add lemon juice, add to a spray bottle and you have air freshener
Place unscented kitty litter in bowls to absorb odors
Place vinegar in a bowl to absorb odors

Cutting board sanitizing:  Sterilize your cutting boards with a two step process.  First spray hydrogen peroxide solution let sit for 10 minutes.  Next step is dry the board and spray again with undiluted white vinegar. Lastly, dry the board bacteria love moist places.  It is a good practice to use color coded cutting boards, one for meat and another vegetables.

Disinfect sponges:  Toss sponges in dishwasher whenever you run the dishwasher, or microwave for 30 seconds.

Furniture polish: Mix 1/8 cup lemon juice with 1/4 cup olive oil. Strongly suggest a good microfiber towel.

Disinfectants

Hot water and soap will kill some bacteria.
Mix 1/2 cup Borax into 1 gallon hot water
Mix a half-cup of borax with 1 gallon hot water. and then add your favorite herb.  Steep for 10 minutes, strain and cool. Or you can substitute a fragrant oil instead of the herbs. Store in a spray bottle.
2 tablespoons borax, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 2 cups hot water. Combine the borax and lemon juice with the water in a spray bottle. Use as you would any commercial all-purpose cleaner.
Herbal disinfectant: Choose your favorite herb ( lavender, eucalyptus, juniper, sage, thyme, or rosemary are some good examples). Simmer the leaves and stems for 25-35 minutes. The amount of water doesn”t really matter, but the less water the stronger the solution.  Boil, cool, strain, pour into bottle, and it works on anything but glass. If you need it to cut grease add a couple of drops of natural soap/dish detergent.

All purpose cleaners

Vinegar/salt mixed together and you have a good scrub for kitchen sinks etc.
Baking Soda. Dissolve 8 tablespoons baking soda in 2 quart warm water for a general cleaner.
Plain old baking soda on a damp sponge. Baking soda cleans and deodorizes all kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
Liquid castile soap and baking soda or Borax and experiment with ratios. Floors, walls and counters-use a little soap and soda/borax with lots of water.

Bathtubs, sinks, litter boxes, use more soap, soda/Borax

Counter Tops/Kitchen Surfaces:

Use as a final rinse after cleaning kitchen surfaces.
Pick any of the following essential oils.  Mix and match.   Ratio is 4 drops to each pint.  Store in a spray bottle.

Mint
Grapefruit
Orange
Wintergreen
Rosemary
Sage
Eucalyptus
Pine
Lavender
Cypress
Lemon
Lemongrass
Lime

Wood floor wax: 50/50 olive oil and vinegar.  Use a microfiber mop to apply.

“Bleaching” bedsheets:  Wash the sheets in the hottest water possible for the sheets and then hang the sheets the sun. Ultraviolet light is a natural germ killer and makes sheets whiter.  Is there anything nicer than the smell of sheets dried outdoors?  I would suggest using softener in the washing cycle for softness.

Glass cleaner: Mix 1/2 cup vinegar with one gallon water.

Streak free glass cleaner 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 quart warm water  and then mix.  Apply with a sponge or a spray bottle and spray on. Use newspaper instead of paper towels for lint-free results

Tarnished brass, bronze, copper, aluminium:  Slice lemons and rub the metal.  For more difficult jobs sprinkle baking soda on lemons and then buff/rub.

Microwave cleaning: Take a microwave safe bowl and add 1 cup white vinegar and 2 cups water.  Place in microwave for 3-5 minutes until it boils and then wipe.  The steam will remove/soften the food and grime.  LOVE this trick!

Silver/jewlery etc polish: Toothpaste and elbow grease and then rinse with water.

Killing bugs/insects:  To kill aphids on roses and other plants mix 3 tsp of baking soda and two pints of lukewarm water and apply 7-10 days.  If you have ants wipe your counters with undiluted vinegar. Spray the vinegar where they are entering and dried peppers also works well. Roaches dislike bay leaves and place them in areas roaches like.
