MRSA

The Journal of the American Medical Association has recently released a report suggesting an antibiotic-resistant staph infection is responsible for more yearly deaths than AIDS!  The bacterium behind these lethal infections, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is no longer found just in hospitals.  MRSA is turning up in schools, prisons, and even an NFL team the Cleveland Browns made the news with a MRSA outbreak.

Why is this important to you?  If you are an owner, facilities manager, or office manager it is critical you have effective cleaning and disinfecting procedures in place.   Additionally the cleaning company you use use should be knowledgeable  and be implementing the latest in infection control.  MRSA spreads most commonly through skin-to-skin contact and contact with contaminated everyday objects.  Red flags with cleaning companies There are currently no vaccines in place and we must focus on prevention.  The CDC identifies the 5 C’s — Contact, Crowding, Contaminated Items, Compromised Skin Integrity and Cleanliness.

It is impossible to eliminate 100% of the risk, but with a routine regimen of hand washing, surface cleaning and disinfection, you can greatly reduce your risk.  Not all cleaners disinfect and you need to know your service is using disinfecting cleaners and leaving on the surface the required amount of time so that the item is disinfected.

Always check the label of all cleaning products.  You need to know what germs it will kill (MRSA?)  and how the product must be used to achieve optimum results.  A good disinfectant does not kill MRSA, or any other germ, if it sprayed on and then immediately wiped on rinsed away!  The surface being disinfected needs to remain damp and saturated with product for the duration of this contact time. If the contact time is not followed properly MRSA and his friends the flu likely will survive on the surface, leading to cross-contamination.

Cleaning and disinfecting programs are difficult for the busy business owner to manage.  J& P can manage it for you and you know your facility is being cleaned AND disinfected properly.  How much is a healthy facility and peace of mind worth?

Swine Flu and You

• Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness are increasing nationally. Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness are higher than what is expected during this time of year and have increased over the last four weeks.

• Total influenza hospitalization rates for adults and children are similar to or lower than seasonal influenza hospitalization rates depending on age group, but are higher than expected in the summer months.

• The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza was low and within the bounds of what is expected in the summer.

• Eleven states (Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Tennessee) and Guam are reporting widespread influenza activity at this time. Any reports of widespread influenza activity in August and September are very unusual.

• Almost all of the influenza viruses identified were 2009 H1N1 influenza A viruses. These 2009 H1N1 viruses remain similar to the viruses chosen for the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, and remain susceptible to antiviral drugs (oseltamivir and zanamivir) with rare exception.

Every day millions of people leave their homes for work, grocery stores, doctors offices, schools, restaurants etc.  With all these folks come unseen germs we pass along to one another.
Over the last year Swine flu aka H1N1 has spread in many different countries. There are several very important things we can all do to help slow down the spread and hopefully keep you well.  Hand washing is the most important thing an individual can do to prevent many illnesses, but you need to do it correctly.  Wash your hands for twenty seconds with very warm water (110 degrees) and use soap.  Pay attention to the backs of your hands and around the nails.  Another key to prevention is a clean home and office.  Disinfecting commonly used items phones, light switches, desks, keyboards, restrooms are several examples.  The staff must understand how to break the chain of infection.  Poorly trained employees can do more harm than good!  Color-coded microfiber clothes on specific areas of the facility are a must to prevent cross contamination.  Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose because this is a common entry point.  Besides swine flu there is the common cold, stomach bugs, the flu all illnesses that no one wants to catch and you can reduce your exposure. So don’t forget good old fashion hand washing and clean and disinfected home and business.
